SFA's newest fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi, is working on changing the views of fraternities.

"We're not really into the whole stereotypical fraternity," said their chairman, Justin Barington of Llano.

Pi Kappa Phi is a community service fraternity that works with Lufkin State Supported Living through its philanthropy, Push America, a national Pi Kappa Phi organization that serves people with disabilities, from war veterans to kids with disabilities. Everyone can donate to Push America by texting PUSH265 to 50555. This will donate $5 which can be added to your cell phone bill.

"We're looking for cooler guys that want to make a difference," Barington said. Pi Kappa Phi members should exemplify C.L.A.S.S.-Character, Leadership, Academics, Sportsmanship, and Service. Currently, Pi Kappa Phi requires five community service hours a month.

A few weeks ago, Pi Kappa Phi hosted a bike-a-thon in front of the student center as a fundraiser for Push America. They rode the bike for 900 miles for 48 hours, from 9:30 on Wednesday morning until 9:30 a.m. on Friday. They raised $185 dollars, and students donated $15 via text message.

Coming up soon, the group will host a fundraiser for the fraternity in which they tase each other for donations. Also, Barrington said they are trying to arrange a dinner party to raise awareness about disabilities by having everyone pull a disability out of a hat and acting that out all night. For example, if someone draws a disability that would keep them from talking, they can't speak. The others at the party can help them out. This gives a taste of how it is to have a disability and how it is to help the disabled out.

Next spring, the guys are looking to have a charter. According to Barington, they are just looking for "people who want to stand out and make a difference."
