In February 2010, Houston junior Tidarian Birklett thought of an idea to start a organization for students who are communications majors. His main focus for the organization is to help students develop good networking skills so by the time they graduate from college they will have experience outside of class, have more items on their resume and be able to present them.
Birklett, said, "There are not many organizations on campus for communication majors." He continued he wanted to start an organization to get the students of SFA involved.
After several meetings, the group of interested students considered what the name of the organization should be. Although there were many good names, the one that stood out was Mass Communication Association (MCA.) Birklett said they want to make sure the name that was chosen was professional.
Also at the meetings the group members were able to get an idea of what events they wanted to plan and what they wanted to stand for.
Last Tuesday they sponsored a yard party in front of the student center, because the organization just wanted to have one big event before the semester ended, to let the students of SFA know they were official organization.
MCA is an organization available for any communication major from public relations to radio /TV.
The objective is to make a change on campus and to do something that has never been done before.
In the fall , news about interest meetings will be posted around campus. MCA also has started a Facebook page, and coming soon, the group will develop a Web site.
