Mudballs, occurring in conjunction with Springfest, will take place on April 24 starting at 9 a.m.
Mudballs is a volleyball tournament that takes place in four mud pits by the Lumberjack Alley site closest to the river. Last year 75 teams participated, and the tournament lasted until the spring football game.
The Student Foundation which runs the mudball part of the competition is encouraging any students who want to compete to register early. Early registration is $30, and registering the day of the tournament is $40.
In past years brackets were drawn up that day when teams arrived. This required teams to show up at 9 a.m. to find out when their team played.
This year the Student Foundation is going to have a coaches' meeting the night before. A bracket will be drawn up the night before to let teams know when their game will be scheduled.
Charles Tomberlain, senior from Longview, is the executive director of the Student Foundation.
"This way you don't have to show up at the crack of dawn and sit and wait around," Tomberlain said.
Mudballs started as a tradition in 2003. The idea came from a conference that Student Foundation members attended. Since that time SFA's Mudbugs has become one of the highest grossing mud volleyball tournaments.
All the proceeds received from the tournament go to the student foundation's leadership scholarship. The qualifications of the scholarship are based purely on leadership skills. This year the Student Foundation awarded two scholarships.
Since the tournament is occurring in Lumberjack Alley, all normal alcohol rules at the Alley apply.
The Student Foundation will also be selling crawfish tickets for $12.
Anyone in the community is allowed to participate in Mudballs. The competition is not restricted to just students.
Anyone interested in more information about Mudballs, the student foundation, or the Student Foundation scholarship can contact the student foundation through a variety of ways. The office number is 936-468-2842. Or students can email the student foundation at student foundation@sfasu.edu.
"Mudbugs and mudballs, where it's ok to play dirty," Tomberlain said.
