Laterrious Starks and Molly Russell received this year's Mr. And Miss SFA Awards on Feb. 3 during halftime at the men's basketball game against Nicholls State University.
The SFA Alumni Association presents the Mr. and Miss SFA title every year. The award is given to exemplary students who will both represent and promote SFA. Recipients are selected based on their scholarship, participation and leadership in academic and co-curricular activities, citizenship and service and loyalty to the University. Selections are made by a committee of faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Starks described being picked by this committee as "humbling because you don't have to have name recognition to win."
Starks is a senior majoring in political science. He is vice president of the Student Government Association, serves as director of public relations for the SFA Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and is the recording secretary for the Alpha Phi Alpha national conference. Starks has also been a member of the NAACP since 2008. He is a senior officer in the ROTC program and has been executive officer of the SFA Honor Guard since 2007. Starks was the SFA Homecoming king in 2009.
While Starks thinks that titles are nice to have, he said he would like to see leadership activites come out of it.
Russell explained how "Nacogdoches may not be a very big town, but SFA has given so much to me. God knew that I would meet my best friends, bridesmaids and future husband here. He has blessed me with many mentors and opportunities to develop my professional career during my time at SFA. God knew the plans He had for me, and I am so glad that He brought me to SFA."
Russell is a senior majoring in child and family development. Russell is former president of the Traditions Council and a member of Phi Omicron Upsilon. She is also a program board member for the Student Activities Association.
"The opportunity to be a student at Stephen F. Austin is such a blessing," she said. "I truly enjoy every aspect of being a Lumberjack. Being awarded with the honor of Miss SFA is such a privilege because it comes from the staff and alumni. It is an acknowledgment that those around me recognize that I try my hardest to represent this University as I would represent my family."
The Mr. SFA Award was established in honor of the late Stan McKewen, a 1934 SFA graduate. The Miss SFA Award was established in honor of Arnodean Covin. Covin was named Miss SFA in 1940, 1941 and 1942.
