ince 1998 the School of Art at SFA has held a Biennial Art exhibition and competition. The exhibits include fine art jewelry and other metal works that seek to intrigue even the common eye. The chosen theme this year is "Redefined IV-Back to Basics."

Metal art has been defined as any art crafted from metals of the earth. Kimella Sachs a contributing writer for eHow.com examines the Early Bronze age about 3000 B.C. to discover artistic artifacts made were primarily hammered metals. Sachs states "Tracing metal art distinguishes the artistic development of mankind, also vital to understanding human history". More on this information can be found at Http://www.ehow.com/about_5435976_history-metal-art.html.

As metal art has evolved over the years it has become more decorative. Christian Cutler, director of galleries at SFA said "The biennial metal art exhibition is an opportunity for artist to showcase their work."

As the craft of metal art entered the 20th century it began to challenge the artists' inspiration and create an evolution of abstract design. This opened doors to freedom of expression as well as possible divine transcendence in the creation of the artifact.

"This is the sixth show held here at SFA and draws some of the best international talent," Cutler said.

They receive about 700 pieces from approximately 200 to 300 jewelers and metal artists. However, only 50 pieces are chosen to be showcased and judged. The competition disburses $1,500 among the winners.

The artifacts range from whimsical designs that provoke thought to practical items with an eccentric twist of intrigue in the intrinsic composition of the redefinition. Cutler states "the timing of the exhibition coincides with the metal art conference in Houston, Texas hosted by (SNAG) Society of North American Goldsmiths, and will likely bring an influx of visitors to the SFA Cole Art Center that will include jewelers, artists, students and other art lovers.

The "Redefined IV- Back to Basics" jewelry and metal art exhibition will continue until March 20. It can be viewed at the Cole Art Center/Old Opera House Reavley Gallery. 329 East Main St,. Nacogdoches Tuesday through Friday 12:30-5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. -5 p.m. The show is sponsored in part by the SFA Friends of Visual Art and Nacogdoches Junior Forum.
