The Pine Log is looking for writers, photographers, cartoonists and advertising representatives for the spring staff, and the deadline to apply for those positions has been extended to Friday, Dec. 11.

Marie Leonard, Sachse senior and spring editor for the twice-weekly campus newspaper, said the more students who are involved with the publication, the better it will serve the campus community.

"We want to give as many students as possible the opportunity to work for The Pine Log," she said. "It is a situation that's good for the newspaper and good for the students, as well."

There are no specific requirements for being hired to work for the publication. Experience in writing, photography, art or sales is helpful but not required.

"Students sometimes think we just want journalism majors," Leonard said, "but that's not the case. We have editors, writers and photographers from many different majors and with many different interests. We want our staff to reflect the diversity in our student population."

There are two categories of student employees at The Pine Log. Students who are hired as staff writers/photographers usually get two weekly assignments and are paid. Contributing writers and photographers generally receive one assignment a week and are not paid. Advertising reps are paid on a commission basis; cartoonists are paid based on work published.

"A contributing position is sometimes a great way to start out to see if you like the work," the editor said. "We move contributors up to staff rank when they are ready to take on more responsibility."

The Pine Log adviser and director of student publications, Pat Spence, thinks working on the student publication is a good way to get experience that will translate into real-world value.

"Student staff members who have worked on a viable, student-produced newspaper like The Pine Log, develop expertise and skills that build on what they have learned in the classroom," she said. "They learn to work as a member of a team in a professional environment. They also accumulate published samples of their work that can help them in a job search after graduation."

"Employers want to see that students have done more than simply sit in a classroom during their college years," Spence said. "They want to know they have sought experiences that will make them valuable, productive employers after graduation."

Staff applications for the spring are available in the student publications office, Room 2.308 Baker Pattillo Student Center, or on The Pine Log Web site at www.thepinelog.com. To download the application, click on "Work for Us" in the left bar.

Applications should be returned to student publications by 5 p.m. Friday. The applications process requires that a student submit the form with a short letter of intent, saying why they want to work for The Pine Log.

Questions can be directed to Leonard or Spence by phone at 936-468-4703 or via e-mail at pinelog@sfasu.edu.
