The Buzz: Thanksgiving

FILM: Can we all take a moment and be thankful that we weathered the opening weekend of New Moon? That means we're closer to everyone forgetting about it. In the mean time, Nicolas Cage has buzz building for his performance in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. The title sounds like a straight-to-video clunker, but reviews are calling Cage's performance as a drug-addicted, loose-cannon detective his best in years. It'll be releasing nationwide this weekend, so look for it when you're home for the holidays.
DVD: Personally, I'm thankful for Judd Apatow, who over the past decade or so has built an empire that currently reigns over comedy in Hollywood. His latest effort, Funny People, stars Adam Sandler as a rich and famous comedian who undergoes a life transformation after a cancer scare, and Seth Rogen as his protégé. It's a little long and meanders at times, but Sandler is terrific, as is the supporting cast.
MUSIC: I'm no music aficionado, but between Lady Gaga and John Mayer and the usual garbage I hear when I turn on the radio, it's hard to find much music to give thanks for. So all the more reason I'm grateful that I recently discovered Drive-By Truckers, an Athens, Georgia-based band that blends alternative country with Southern Rock to create a unique, appealing sound that has earned them a moderate-sized, loyal fanbase. Their latest album, The Fine Print, is a collection of previously unreleased material as well a couple of covers like Tom Waits's "Rebels" and Bob Dylan's classic "Like a Rolling Stone". Good enough, but if you want their best, look back to 2004's The Dirty South.
