Fans of the Twilight saga have been waiting almost exactly a year for the second installment in the popular series. The film Twilight: New Moon debuted on Friday, breaking the record for the biggest one-day gross, taking away the title from 2008's The Dark Knight.

Although New Moon had the same cast of main characters as the first movie in the series, director Catherine Hardwicke was replaced by Chris Weitz, who is known for directing The Golden Compass and About A Boy. The decision to change directors for the second movie was a great choice; New Moon stayed true to the book just like Twilight did, but without most of the cheesy, awkward moments and the handheld camera from the first film. Instead, fans got a polished film that shows off Taylor Lautner's six pack and werewolf CGI.

Contrary to reviews from the nation's stuffy movie critics, New Moon is eons better than Twilight. The film begins with Bella Swan's 18th birthday party, where an accident happens with Jasper Cullen. Shortly after, the Cullen family chooses to move away in order to keep Bella safe from anymore accidents. Bella continues to pine after Edward for a few months, until she begins to spend time fixing motorcycles with her friend Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner. Fans of the series had previously swooned mainly over vampire Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson, but now that Lautner has gotten buffer, many fans are switching from Team Edward to Team Jacob.

It is obvious Jacob has feelings that are more than "just friends" toward Bella although she just can't seem to get over Edward who has been gone for months. The chemistry between the two works well in the movie, even though Bella can't let Jacob into her heart. Although the end of the film was slightly different from that of the novel, Jacob and Edward still set themselves up to fight for Bella's affection in the third installment, Eclipse.

The special effects also improved greatly from the first movie, due to the werewolf CGI scenes. The soundtrack for the second film also got even better, featuring tracks from Death Cab For Cutie, The Killers, Muse, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear and many more.

All in all, New Moon is a great second installment in the Twilight saga. Better special effects, writing, acting and music than the first film in the series will keep teenaged fans coming back for more throughout the holiday season.
