The 13th anual Nine Flags festival is set to begin this Saturday in downtown Nacogdoches.

Nine different flags have flown over Nacogodoches, and this year's festival is paying tribute to the Texas flag. Visitors from all over the state travel to Nacogdoches for this historic event, and SFA students are encouraged to attend.

Local community members and out-of-town travelers alike will enjoy the festival's events throughout the month.

"We welcome everyone to downtown Nacogodoches to help us ring in the holidays," said Anderson Dolton, event coordinator for the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Nine Flags festival begins this Saturday and will continue until its conclusion on Dec. 12.

This Saturday's events will include a Tour de Nac, The Spirit of Christmas toy drive and the Festival of Trees.

The Tour de Nac is a bicycle ride through downtown to see the sites of Nacogdoches and the piney woods surrounding it. A 7.8-mile, a 28.8-mile, and a 53.3-mile route will be included. The ride starts at 8 a.m. Early registration is $25 and $30 for late registration. Forms are available at the Visitor Center at 200 E. Main St. and online.

The Spirit of Christmas toy drive will make sure that every child in Nacogdoches has a gift to unwrap on Christmas morning. Donated toys will be distributed through the Nacogdoches County Children's Charities. Unwrapped toys may be dropped off Nov. 14-Dec. 12 at the Visitor Center.

The Festival of tree will be held Nov. 14-Dec. 31 and is a collection of Christmas trees that are each decorated in representation of one of the nine flags. The display will be in the lobby of the Visitors Center during normal business hours.

The biggest event that the festival prides itself on will be held on Dec. 5 with the largest lighted Christmas parade in East Texas hitting the bricks of downtown Nacogdoches.

Other events that will be held prior to the parade are breakfast pancakes with Santa, the Jingle Bell Run, arts and crafts, live entertainment, children's activities, food vendors and the night will conclude with a 30-minute fireworks show after the parade.
