The 13th annual Nine Flags Festival will be in full swing Saturday, Dec. 5, in downtown Nacogdoches with an entire day of holiday fun ending with the largest lighted Christmas parade in East Texas sponsored by First Bank & Trust East Texas.

The day starts early with Pancakes with Santa and the Jingle Bell Run and will also offer arts & crafts and food vendors, live entertainment, competitions, children's activities and a fireworks show.

"If you can only make it downtown for one day of the Nine Flags Festival, this is the day you don't want to miss," Anderson Dolton, event coordinator for the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau said.

Start the day off right, enjoying pancakes with Santa from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Hotel Fredonia, 200 N. Fredonia St. Santa will arrive at 8:30 a.m. Café Fredonia will provide a breakfast buffet for $9.95 for adults and $5.95 for children ages 4-6. Children 3 and under eat free.

The annual Jingle Bell Run, a certified 5K run and 3K walk, will start at 8:30 a.m. and proceed through the city's historic residential and business districts. Registration packets are available at the Visitors' Center, located at 200 E. Main St. Fees are $15 (early registration) or $20 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under.

Day one of the Texas Old-Time Fiddler's State Championship Contest will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Banita Creek Hall. Arts & crafts and food vendors will be set up from 4 to 9 p.m. on the downtown square. Entertainment will be provided by the Cowboy Poet Dave Watson and the SFA Charter School along with other talented acts.

As the days unfold, excitement will be building for the largest lighted Christmas parade in East Texas beginning at 6:30 p.m. and winding its way through downtown, which itself will be aglow with more than 3 million festive holiday lights. The Budweiser Clydesdales will also be a main attraction in the holiday parade. The evening will culminate in a 30-minute fireworks display to light up the sky over downtown.

The Nine Flags Festival is a celebration of Texas history & culture and will be held Nov. 14 through Dec. 12 in Nacogdoches, located about 150 miles north of Houston via U.S. 59. Nine different flags have flown over the oldest town in Texas throughout its rich history, and this year's festival will pay special tribute to the Texas flag.
