Percussion Ensemble scheduled

The SFA Percussion Ensemble will present its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The group will present works from a wide variety of percussion and musical styles.
The concert will open with the exciting and energetic drumming quintet Ogoun Badagris by Christopher Rouse, said Scott Harris, SFA associate professor of percussion and the ensemble's director. "Derived from Haitian drumming patterns, the piece musically explores the various aspects of voodoo rituals."
The large ensemble centerpiece of the concert will be Whispers by David Skidmore. This piece was the winner of the 2005 Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest and is a highly intelligent work that encourages listeners to go beyond the typical drumming concepts of beat and rhythm and hear music in layers of dynamically sustained colors," explained Harris.
Other works on the program include David Gillingham's Normandy Beach -a musical depiction of the storming of Normandy Beach during WWII featuring a marimba quartet with supplemental percussion; Scott Harding's Taiko, a demonstrative work showcasing the ancient style of Japanese Takio drumming; and a keyboard transcription of the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 by Scott Harris.
The concert will close with a salsa/calypso arrangement of Limejuice by Arthur Lipner that will feature many members of the ensemble on improvised solos.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Dr.
