MOVIES: The Men Who Stare at Goats stars Ewan McGregor as a journalist who meets a guy named Lyn Cassaday, a man claiming to be a former member of the Army's First Earth Battalion, a unit that fights with their minds. You might have seen the previews where George Clooney kills a goat by concentrating. Sounds trippy. And the cast is an ace: McGregor and Clooney are assisted by Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey.
MUSIC: Get your groove on, geeks. Your new favorite show, Glee, has its own soundtrack out now entitled Glee: The Music, Volume 1. Recent pop hits as well as old rock ballads permeate the album. The still-classic cheese of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" makes this CD a karaoke-ready stalwart.
BOOKS: Considering that students love to read so much these days, I thought I'd give a shout-out to one of contemporary literature's most beloved storytellers, John Irving, and his new novel, Last Night in Twisted River. The novel spans five decades, beginning with Dominic Baciagalupo, his son, Danny Angel, and best friend, Ketchu, as tragedy strikes them at Dominic's logging company. Danny grows up to be a celebrity novelist and finds that his checkered past continues to haunt him. Being that this is Irving, you'll find plenty of melodrama and sap, but his skill at telling a story with heart and emotion will keep you burning through pages.
TELEVISION: 30 Rock has won about every comedy award under the sun, but I'd bet my lunch money you still haven't watched it. Now's your chance to rectify your errors and watch Tina Fey as she spins timely financial anxieties into comedic gold on NBC's Thursday night sitcom. Alec Baldwin, the funniest guy on TV right now, co-stars as Jack Donaghy, Fey's hilariously boorish boss.
