SFA Young Democrats to host watch party for healthcare address on college campus
Issue date: 9/17/09 Section: News
The SFA Young Democrats, in coordination with the Young Democrats of America, will host a town hall Watch Party as President Obama makes his first address on a college campus to young people on the issue of health insurance reform.
This will be Obama's third event to promote health insurance reform since his speech to a Joint Session of Congress, and the first to be held on a college campus. Obama will discuss what is at stake for young people in this debate, which is being held at the University of Maryland, and the importance of health insurance reform for all Americans.
According to a study by the Urban Institute, "Over 10 million, or nearly one in three, young adults ages 19 to 26 lacks health insurance coverage. Young adults are at higher risk of lacking health insurance coverage relative to other age groups because they have low access to both employer-sponsored insurance and subsidized public coverage."
The Young Democrats of SFA have joined with the Young Democrats of America to ask all young adults to consider Obama's health insurance reform plan and are pledging to fight for reform at www.yda.org/healthpledge.
The SFA Young Democrats, in line with this event, will also host guest speaker Vik Verma (Organizing for America), who will discuss health insurance reform at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, in Room 2.307 in the BPSC.
