SFA is near and dear to the heart of Dr. Scott Coleman, heart who serves as one of the newest members ofthe Board of Regents. He is on the finance and audit committee, which keeps an eye on all the money going in and out of the school. They keep track of where it goes and where it comes from. Also, they approve faculty and do background work.

"We try to keep everyone happy, keeping tuition low," Coleman said.

He is enthused to be a part of the Board of Regents; he started at SFA in 1976 and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and minor in chemistry. While attending SFA, he met his wife Pamm Varley, who was editor of The Pine Log in 1980.

Looking into the future, Coleman believes new buildings and expansion will be important. Having a parking program means attendance is moving up, which means more and more students on campus. He says those are a good problems to have. They want to provide a quality program and have the pieces in place.

When he was named to the Board of Regents this past year by Gov. Rick Perry, the appointment was the furthest thing from his mind. When he realized what the Board of Regents did, he thought of SFA as a big part of his past and present. "If it wasn't for SFA, I wouldn't have dealt with any interest in the Board of Regents," he said.

Other projects his committee is pushing for include a new chemistry building. The new sign on the corner of East College and North Street has been completed, and the landscaping is the next portion of that project.

"We want to freshen up and look great, while trying to attract new talent," Coleman said. "Most people fall in love with (SFA.)"

Being a regent requires Coleman to be here a couple times a month and come to events, but having to commute from Houston is not difficult. When he is not performing his duties as a regent, he has his own dentistry practice in West Houston. He is also an Eagle Scout, a licensed pilot, a martial artist and a member of the American Dental Association and the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

"We try to be present at as many events as we can, hanging out and supporting," Coleman said. "The only time you get one-on-one with us is at Commencement, where we hopefully get to shake your hand."

Coleman uses three words to describe members of the Board of Regents-caring, intelligent and dedicated.

"We truly care deeply about the University, students and faculty," he said. "Intelligent explains how the group understands what is going on.

"Cut them deep and bleed purple," Coleman said.

"I have never seen any other board that I have served on that cares more," he said.

He firmly believes that SFA is the best kept secret in the state of Texas.
