Valentine's Day started off as a Roman festival where men stripped naked, grabbed goat- or dog-skin whips, and spanked young maidens in hopes of increasing their fertility, according to Noel Lenski, classics professor of the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Valentine's Day has become about more than just fertility; it is now about expressing the love one shares with someone. It is the time of year when candy hearts, chocolate and flowers are most popular.
If someone is spending Valentine's Day with their spouse, there are a couple of things to remember on this day of love. The cardinal rule in giving gifts is to not give a gift expecting something back. Do not buy an expensive gift expecting to get something expensive in return. If there is no budget, then expensive is fine. Also, don't just give the annual cheesy flowers, candy and a card. Make the gift something memorable and thoughtful. Let the gift show there was some thought put into it.
Valentine's should be a day of fun and love. Don't take it too seriously, but there should be some expectations.
Do not plan to spend Valentine's Day with someone who is not your spouse. For an example, do not try to spend Valentine's Day with someone else boyfriend.
If women did not already know, guys deserve gifts, too, on Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is not "just show your girlfriend love day." It is a day that both people in a relationship should show each other love.
Order any gifts or flowers ahead of time; do not wait until the last minute. Women can always tell when a gift was a last minute gift.
If you're giving a card, make sure you truly express yourself in the card. Don't just sign the card and leave it as is.
If a person is not your boyfriend or girlfriend or you don't already have some type of established relationship, do not expect anything from them on Valentine's Day.
If you do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend for Valentine's Day do not be too embarrassed to have a good old fashioned night out with your friends. Treat your best friend to some flowers or candy. Let your friends know how much you love them. I guess this applies mostly to women, because men are not that into the whole mushy gushy love thing.
If you do not do anything else for Valentine's Day just let someone know you love them.
