Issue date: 2/12/09 Section: News
Retired SFA social work professor, Dr. Linda Morales, died yesterday.
Morales began her work at a professor at SFA in 1988 and in 2002 was promoted to the director/associate dean of the SFA School of Social Work.
Morales received her BA in literature from SFA and both her MSSW and Ph.D. degrees in social work from UT-Arlington. She was a distinguished author and highly regarded as a presenter on such topics as mental health, social work ethics, HIV/AIDS, rural social work, diversity and social work pedagogy. In 1996, she received the SFA Teaching Excellence Award for the College of Applied Arts and Sciences.
"Dr. Morales was one of the most dynamic leaders the School of Social Work has ever had," Dr. Freddie Avant, director of the School of Social Work, said. "She provided leadership for the school to grow and to become a leader in the rural social work education."
Morales is described by her colleagues and former students as an advocate; a competent and hard worker; an effective mentor who offered encouragement, support and genuine concern for students; an eternal optimist; and a friend.
Morales retired from SFA in 2007 but remained active in the East Texas community. She is survived by her three sisters. Funeral services have yet to be determined.

Linda Morales was a true friend of mine and a confidant. She helped me to turn my life around to become what I am today and when I saw this article I was shocked that she had died as we emailed each other often. (Continued…)

Dr. Morales made me feel so welcomed when I entered the MSW program. She was a wonderful teacher, and I always looked forward to her classes. I learned a great deal from her, and I am very saddened that wasn't able to be around to give to others what she gave to me. (Continued…)
