The Ladyjacks did everything but take a break over the holidays.
The weekend following finals, the women's basketball team traveled to Mexico for the Cancun Caribbean Classic where they fell to Missouri State, 82-63, and San Francisco, 70-59. Despite the losses, Ladyjacks' head coach, Lee Ann Riley, is still grateful for the trip.
"It was a great opportunity to travel to Cancun," Riley said. "It was a great experience for the team. They were very appreciative; you could see it in their eyes."
Once the Ladyjacks got back from Cancun, they had a break before going back on the road to face Auburn on Jan. 3, where they lost 79-56. On Jan. 10 they lost a heartbreaker to Sam Houston, 68-65, on the road despite Whitney Cormier, Fort Worth junior, having a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Finally, on Jan. 14, the Ladyjacks beat Central Arkansas at home, 76-66. Cormier had a career-high 24 points.
The Ladyjacks then went to Nicholls and won 92-56 on Jan.17 where it was a collective effort. Three players scored eight points in the first half: Decreasha Goodner, Austin sophomore, Amina Sawyer, Pflugerville freshman and Cormier. Sawyer finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, Goodner finished with 12 points and four rebounds and Cormier ended the game with eight points and two rebounds.
Continuing conference play on Jan. 24, SFA beat Southeastern Louisiana at home, 69-66, with Cormier being the lead scorer with 17 points.
The Ladyjacks got back on the road to play Northwestern State on Jan. 28 where they lost 76-69. To start the week off at home, the Ladyjacks played McNeese State on Saturday and won 55-50. Cormier and Goodner both scored 14 points while Cormier had 12 rebounds. This win moved the Ladyjacks to 9-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
"In conference play, you have to turn around and play again," Riley said. "It's always fun to play at home and we're looking forward to getting back on the winning streak.
It's really important we win our home games. We always appreciate when students and faculty come. You play better when you see your friends and family here."
The Ladyjacks are scheduled to play Nicholls at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
