The School of Music has opened two choral programs for the upcoming spring semester to all SFA students.

"(This class) counts for an elective credit (is) low stress (and) has little outside time needed," said David Howard, associate director of choirs.

The two choral programs are: MUP (Music Performance) 133.002 Choral Union, which meets MWF 12:00 - 12:50 and MUP 133.003 Women's Choir, which meets TR 12:30-1:45. Both classes are one credit hour and have dress rehearsals the night before a performance.

The Choral Union is a mixed male and female chorus that has on average 70 to 75 students who sing a wide range of works. In the past, this chorus has preformed works including Handel's "Messiah", "Verdi's "Requiem" and Haydn's "Creation. Rehearsal is three times a week and two concert performances during the semester.

The Women's Choir is a female chorus that has on average 25 to 30 students who explore treble repertoire from the last 500 years with a special emphasis on contemporary works. Rehearsal is two times a week and two concert performances during the semester

"(There are) two concerts; one we combine with the Symphony Orchestra, (and) the second is just the Union Choral and Women's Choir. This year we combine with (them to do) "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff," Howard said.

Carmina Burana is a powerful piece of 20th century music that often introduces young (and not so young!) people to the world of "serious" or "classical" music.

(There's) no audition per say. (Just) register for (the) choir (class,) and then I (will) listen to each new student to see what their voice sounds like and balance the group," Howard said.

He said he has been getting a good response and lots of e-mails about students wanting to enroll in the choral programs.

"We hope to get as many students as we can get. (We're not looking) for a number specifically," he said.

Howard conducted choirs at the secondary level in the Oklahoma City area before he came to SFA. He also maintains an active solo performance schedule with frequent oratorio and cantata presentations by churches, university choirs, community choirs and schools.

Also, he will be performing as the baritone soloist in the performance of "Carmina Burana" and has been listed in the Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and in Who's Who among America's Teachers

"(This class is) great for any student for elective credit and gives them a chance to do something fun outside of their major," Howard said.

Any student interested is asked to contact Howard at 936-468-1148 or e-mail him at howardd@sfasu.edu.
