The new wave '80s cover band, The Spazmatics, will be performing on Friday around 10 p.m. at the Homecoming bonfire.

The Spazmatics will take the stage after the Homecoming court is announced, and the fireworks show will kick off their first song. The band will perform two, 45-minute sessions of '80s classic music such as "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey, "Take On Me" by The A-Ha's and "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield.

Zebine Bojler, Stockholm, Sweden, senior and coordinator for the event, first heard the band while attending a national conference for Campus Recreation in Austin and thought the band would be perfect for the '80s theme of Homecoming.

"I really liked their enthusiasm," Bojler said. "They were full of energy and were very interactive with the crowd."

The band consists of four members and each member has a costume they perform in. Al, the lead singer and guitarist, dresses as a nerd with a neck brace; Bjorn, the bass player, dresses as an '80s ping pong player; Geoffrey, the guitarist and back up vocals, dresses as a nerd bicycle rider, and Cecil, the drummer, dresses as a dorky version of Carlton from "The Fresh Prince of Bellaire."

The band members are influenced by Star Wars, Dungeons and Dragons, Rick Springfield, Billy Idol, The Cure and Flock of Seagulls.

The Spazmatics perform every Wednesday on Cedar Street in Austin and at Sammy's every Thursday in Houston and have become widely popular.

"They are super awesome," Logan McClure, Houston sophomore and member of SAA, said. "I saw them in Houston last summer."

These guys are great. I wish I was still in Texas to experience the show.
