This past weekend the Ladyjack Volleyball team hosted Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana, extending the SFA winning streak to 12 games.

Shelly Swendig, Garland senior, had 14 kills in the game which helped the team win 3-0 over Nicholls State on Friday. The team hit over .460 in each of the final two sets. SFA scored 7 of the 8 points before the kills from Swendig, and Ashley Bailey, Mesquite junior, took off in the set with a 5-point lead over Nicholls.

In the third set SFA was ahead 12-0 when Whitney Schott, Roscoe, Ill., sophomore, landed 5 kills on the 7 tries. Three other Ladyjacks in the same set had at least 2 kills.

With Swendig's 14 kills leading the way, Bailey followed closely behind with a dozen, and Kelsey Owens, The Colony sophomore, and Lauren Railey, McKinney senior, each recorded 7 kills. Bailey led the way on defense with 5 blocks, as MC Bottles, Rowlett freshman, added 4 of her own.

"Both are solid teams," head coach Debbie Humphreys said. We need to keep our focus on our side. We are the aggressors, and the outcome will take care of itself."

Through the five matches played at Saturday's game against SE Louisiana, the Ladyjacks remained unbeaten.

Bailey had 12 kills, which knocked the Ladyjacks into a 4-point win in the first set. In set two SFA led 11-2 and took their 2-0 lead into intermission. Owens didn't miss a single hit in the second set of her 15 kills.

The team is taking steps forward each game they play from week to week. They play great defense and find consistency while improving as a team. Lauren Kuepker, La Porte, Ind., sophomore, helped lead all the players in 24 digs throughout the afternoon.

Humphreys is challenging students to attend the games, and she feels if they do they will want to come back for more games.

"I want to encourage students to come out to the games," Humphreys said. "It's free and most times after the matches we offer free pizza."

The Ladyjacks remain unbeaten in Southland Conference play with UTSA as the only other unbeaten team.

The next game for the Ladyjacks will be against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Coliseum. The team will then hit the road to San Antonio for the weekend to go up against UTSA.
