Mattress Firm helps contest winner feel at home in dorm

Lauryn Kennemer, West Columbia freshman, won a variety of electronics and a vacuum cleaner as the winner of the recent dorm room makeover contest sponsored by the Mattress Firm.
"I didn't think I would win the contest at all," Kennemer said.
Tasos Kritikakas, a field-recruiting specialist for central regions at Mattress Firm, along with other company representatives, sponsored the challenge.
The delivery will take place at noon Wednesday, Oct. 1, outside of Kerr Hall. The Mattress Firm employees will also be taking pictures of Kennemer and her prizes at that time.
The contest drawing was held on Aug. 22 , and students had the opportunity to fill out a raffle ticket to win a $500 room makeover. Mattress Firm representatives also helped students get into their dorms and gave them tips on how to adjust to dorm life.
Additional prizes, such as Tempur-pedic pillows, were given out, too.
Kennemer's winning ticket was chosen a week later, and she was able to create a "wish list" of prizes.
Mattress Firm was hosting a wellness program, which included community service, and wanted to extend its community service to the SFA campus.
"We wanted to give back to SFA by giving students a dorm room makeover and help them move into their dorms and get acquainted with new surroundings," Kritikakas said.
The Mattress Firm was the brainchild of two SFA alumni, and the company first opened its doors in 1986 in Houston. Since then, the company has grown, with approximately 500 locations across 22 states.
"What began with a single location in 1986 has grown to become one of the largest and most successful specialty bedding companies in the world," according to its Website.
The company has consistently recruited SFA graduates, and is a frequent participant in campus career fairs.
