Chi Omega kicks off 2nd annual Wish Week
Issue date: 9/29/08 Section: News
Chi Omega Fraternity will start its year off with the 2nd Annual Wish Week, benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Wish Week is a three-day event beginning Thursday, Oct. 2. Chi Omega members will stand outside by the Stephen F. Austin statue for Wish Week Campus Kickoff. According to Amanda Wheeler, Chi Omega Wish Week chair and Santa Fe senior, Chi Omega members will be outside for the majority of the day taking donations for the foundation.
Friday, Oct. 3, Papa John's Pizza on North Street is contributing to the cause. "On Friday, we are encouraging people to go buy pizza," Wheeler said. "If you go into Papa John's Pizza and mention Chi Omega or Make-A-Wish Foundation when you order, then 20 percent of your total cost will be donated to Make-A-Wish."
The last day of Wish Week gives people the opportunity to make a donation and get a car wash. Laser Car Wash, located next to Sonic on North Street, is allowing Chi Omega members to help out during the day while taking donations for the cause.
"Last year during Wish Week we raised approximately $1,500 for Make-A-Wish Foundation," Wheeler said. "Each Chi Omega chapter has a local Make-A-Wish chapter that all donations go to, and our local chapter is out of Houston."
According to Wheeler, Chi Omega sends the money to Houston, and they reply with names and stories of people who have asked for a wish. Since Make-A-Wish Foundation started in 1980, they have granted 169,229 wishes, one wish every 40 minutes.
The SFA Chi Omega chapter hosts two events a year for Make-A-Wish-Wish Week in the fall and Swish-for-a-Wish in the spring. Swish-for-a-Wish is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament open to the public. Chi Omega will host its third tournament next semester.
