The Multicultural Center, in conjunction with UPD, will host a Women's Self-Defense Class from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 17, in Regents Suite B, BPSC.
Tambra Branton of UPD will talk to women about how to be more aware of their surroundings and how to defend themselves. The event is free and open to all women.
The Multicultural Center is also working on bringing in a speaker from the local women's shelter to share her experiences and advice with participants. Women who have had experiences with physical abuse in the past are also welcome to share their stories at the class.
Alicia Millard, secretary of the Multicultural Center, is setting up the event with the help of UPD. "We want to make this an annual or semester event," Millard said. "We are trying to work together with UPD since we have all the resources here."
The class will teach women how to defend themselves when walking alone at night or in a parking lot. "This will be and open and relaxed event. It will teach women things they need to know," Millard said. The Self-Defense Class will teach women how to use resources in their immediate surroundings in case of an attack.
"Self-defense is something we want women to be aware of after they leave campus and in the future," Millard said. Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably, since there will be a few yelling and physical activities.
This event will be held in correlation with Women's History Month, which takes place throughout March, and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which will take place throughout April.
The Multicultural Center will also host an event called the Clothesline Project from April 24 through 29 where students will be able to design t-shirts about their feelings on abuse. This event will be also an opportunity for students to honor victims of physical abuse
These shirts will be displayed on campus in the future. Millard will bring older shirts to the self-defense class in order to show students examples of the project.
Women who have question about the class can call UPD at 936-468-2252, or stop by the Multicultural Center in the Baker Pattillo Student Center.
