Kelly McCorkle and Michelle Nicholas, two seniors from Nacogdoches in the interior design program in the School of Human Sciences, designed a model room in Oak Manor Nursing Center as part of a competition with the other retirement homes in the region, and they won.
"We received a telephone call from the administrator, Cindy Pugh, asking us to help create their model room, and then the students had two weeks to create a concept, shop locally to see what items were there and had [to work within] a $200 budget," Dr. Mitizi R. Perrit, professor of interior design, said.
Oak Manor Nursing Center is a 24-hour nursing care facility for residents recovering from hospitalization or illness and in need of bed care facilities. Their services include individualized nursing care service, medical attention by private physicians, dietary care, and comfortable living quarters. Their philosophy is to offer comfortable surroundings, and interesting activities and to endeavor to provide personal, warm, attention in a modern facility.
To cut down on cost of materials, McCorkle and Nicholas hand-made a few of the pieces for the room.
"We finished installing last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday [and] are just very happy that she thought of SFA and knew our program and gave us a call," Perritt said.
Nexion, supporter of non-profit, charitable organizations that promote and support the health and well-being of the elderly and disabled citizens, asked each retirement home to create a model room for prospective families to show the new residents what the space could look like.
"The work that the students did impressed the owner of the corporation, and he [is] favorable to allow them to continue refurbishment in other areas," Perritt said.
The next project may possibly be to refurbish the lobby and dining areas of Oak Manor Nursing Center and a few more rooms in the months following.
Perrit said she would like to thank Sherwin-Williams, Fred's, Beth's Professional Alterations and Barbara Harris for their assistance in maximizing the project's $200 budget.
