High school students from Dallas, Baytown, Nacogdoches, Garrison and other high schools saw what college life is like while they attended Art Day.
These high school students attended one three-hour studio workshop of their choice including drawing, painting, printmaking, 2-D design, ceramics, sculpture, metals/jewelry, advertising design, and cinematography. An SFA art professor taught the sessions and exposed the high school students to college-level courses.
"Teachers from high schools brought their most sincere and talented art students to the event, (and it) also serves as a recruiting tool for the School of Art," explained Dr. John W. Goodall, interim director of the school.
Art Day has existed for about twenty years and is the reason why some students are now at SFA.
"We do get many students who say they attended Art Day," said Marsha Blount, SFA art instructor and the event's coordinator.
Gary Frields, SFA professor of art, gave an informational digital presentation about the University and the School of Art during the opening session. While the students were in workshops, their teachers toured the Student Recreation Center and The Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
"The teachers were very impressed with those facilities as well as with the informative presentation of the School of Art by Gary Frields and the studio classes," said Blount.
During the afternoon session students and teachers toured the different studios and visited with art faculty.
Karen Wheatley, a teacher from Buffalo, attended the 2006 event and brought three more students this year because it "provides a wonderful opportunity for them."
"This year's Art Day was a great success. There were around forty more students this year; we had around 190 students this year. There were around eight more schools than last year. This year we had around 50 schools," said Blount.
